It isn't the term "hate speech" that is used too often. It is the act of using "hate speech" that happens too often. On the internet, where there are far fewer inhibitions, people let that shit fly.
And when a church teaches that gays are an abomination, that is in fact hate speech.
It'd be a hell of an uphill battle, but even if the only thing to come out of it were some intelligent discussions regarding the intent and meaning of separation of church and state, and discussions regarding the history and meaning and future of marriage... well, I think that'd be a valuable thing for society going forward.
