Let's all feel sorry for the LDS.

After all, they didn nothing but mobilize to regulate gays into second-class citizenship.

We've been spreading hate speech for decades and well, we're just astonished there's any backlash now.

TLF = Typical Liberal Fascism.

Hate speech = opinions you don't agree with.

Video = lazy drive-by media quoting some idiot who's not even in the LDS church.

Elton John--who is gay--wondered aloud at the vehemence of these militant gays. He pointed out civil unions confer the same rights as marriage and therefore couldn't understand the fuss.

TLF.

Liberal fascism makes about as much sense as fireproof matches?

So I assume you think "equal rights" is hate speech then?

I dunno, I don't think there's much of a backlash anymore. Seriously, how long have we gone on LiberalSift without a significant video about this issue?

Good. Fuck 'em. Religion is so fucking stupid, I'd be amazed that it's persisted this long, if I didn't realize that most of humanity is easily swayed by empty gestures and false promises.

Fuck religion.

hate speech
n.
Bigoted speech attacking or disparaging a social or ethnic group or a member of such a group.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

It isn't the term "hate speech" that is used too often. It is the act of using "hate speech" that happens too often. On the internet, where there are far fewer inhibitions, people let that shit fly.

And when a church teaches that gays are an abomination, that is in fact hate speech.

I wish gay activists and constitutionally-minded activists would focus on removing "marriage" as a state-backed institution in favor of civil unions for everyone and marriage for those who give a shit about the religious aspect of it. What's happening these days is trying to fix a broken piece of legislation by adding new clauses to it rather than just replacing it with something that isn't broken in the first place.

It'd be a hell of an uphill battle, but even if the only thing to come out of it were some intelligent discussions regarding the intent and meaning of separation of church and state, and discussions regarding the history and meaning and future of marriage... well, I think that'd be a valuable thing for society going forward.
